Holistic Life Coach – Career Coaching – Podcaster – Author

Meet Glenn Ostlund

My name is Dow Glenn Ostlund II.  Whether you are looking for support in your personal life, professional life – or both – I offer services as a Holistic Life Coach and Career Coach.  I am certified in Hypnosis, Timeline Therapy™, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. I also have a Master’s degree in Folklore and Mythology and work as a recruiter with access to all major industries across the U.S.

I am an eclectic explorer who is fascinated by the intersection of science and spirituality; truth and fiction; intellect and emotion; skepticism and belief. I am a storyteller at heart who has learned over the years that the stories we tell ourselves shape our day-to-day lives in deeply meaningful ways. I have also learned that the vast majority of these stories are unconscious – we don’t really know that we have them, that they are influencing us, or that we can transform them!

I founded “The Dow of Healing” to help my clients with their work-life balance and to become more aware of their unconscious stories – especially those stories that make us feel small, weak, anxious, fearful, shameful, angry and powerless.  I work with clients who want to improve their lives but do not know where to start.  I help my clients develop new habits and rewire their brains using powerful tools like hypnosis, customized meditations, timeline therapy™, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.  Every client I work with is fighting some internal war against their own unconscious mind.  I help them identify the sources of that conflict and negotiate peace – a balance between heart and mind – and I do it with warmth, humor, playfulness, and creativity.

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

– Carl Jung

Trusted Guidance

As a Holistic Life Coach, I take the approach that all things are connected, but most of those connections are very difficult to see. In my work with clients, I focus on three main areas: Awareness, Acceptance, Integration.

Awareness

There is so much about ourselves that we are simply unaware of.  Why do I like this thing but not that thing?  Why do I get triggered? Why is it so hard to break certain habits and develop new ones? Why do other people always seem to let me down? Coaching is a way to gain clarity into the inner workings of your mind as a way of bringing greater awareness into the unconscious stories and programs that makes you tic.

Acceptance

It is one thing to become aware of your unconscious programming, but what if you really don’t like what you find?  In my experience, this is the very reason why so many of us suppress, repress, deny, and project our thoughts and feelings onto others.  We judge what we don’t like and distance ourselves from it.  It is noteworthy that in the Biblical story of Adam and Eve, the paradise they lived in ended once their eyes became open to ideas of “good vs. evil.”  Once they began judging rather than accepting, life got much more challenging.  There are some deep psychological truths to be learned here.

Integration

When you become aware of your unconscious programming and accept that it is yours – not someone else’s – then you can more easily release unnecessary judgment that removes you from your own internal paradise. This does not mean that you will stop judging.  It means that you will change your relationship with your judgment.  Things will become less confusing and less frustrating.  Artistic expression is an excellent integration tool to reinforce your awareness and acceptance.  Many of my clients write, paint, dance, make music, or find other creative ways of expressing what they are learning about themselves.  Integrative artistic expression can transform pain and suffering into beautiful joyful gifts.
Working with Glenn had a powerful effect on me. There was one session where I realized that I had a pretty deep-seated belief that women are not supposed to make money, they can only do it for charity.  After that session I sat there for an hour, and a friend called, and I could hardly even talk.  It was very interesting that I can objectively see that is BS but yet something that hung out deep inside me.  Other life coaching sessions helped me, too.  I have gone back and listened to the sessions, and they help me clarify my thoughts. Difficult life experiences have seemed to go better than I expected because I find it easier to keep my cool.

I signed up for a customized 8-session course with Glenn to help me deal with some anxiety I had around my job and all of the layoffs that were happening in my company.  Before our final session, I was laid off myself, and I was amazed at how well I handled it.  It was still a shock to my system, but it didn’t knock me down into depression.  I am more resilient than I realized I was.

I appreciate how much I learned about myself through coaching because I really do think it has been what has kept me afloat… I mean, not always afloat, but I feel like the way we explored my exposed wounds in coaching has given me the stamina to keep looking at a lot of things that are burning and then choose which ones that need to burn out completely. And also appreciating the light and dark expressions of it all. So it is the gift that keeps giving.

I’ve felt a 100% shift in my mindset and mood and overall contentment over the last few weeks of coaching with Glenn. Even my wife mentioned this week how she’s noticed a massive change in me. How I’m interacting with our kids, towards work, towards myself, others, and I know our “deeper insights” coaching sessions have been integral. I’m filled with gratitude…my cup runneth over. Thanks Glenn!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this called “The Dow of Healing?”
It is a play on my first name “Dow” and the ancient Chinese wisdom tradition of Taosim.  Tao is often translated to mean “the way.” So in a sense “The Dow of Healing” means “The Way of Healing” or at least “Dow’s way of healing.”  You can hear more about this on episode one of The Dow of Healing podcast.
What do you mean by “healing?”

I mean a sense of wholeness. Balance. Peacefulness. Empowerment.  Liberation from negative thoughts caused by past and present trauma.

If I need “healing” does that mean there is something wrong with me?
I don’t think so.  In fact, I think everything is perfect as it is.  We just don’t know it or accept it because we have been conditioned to think that “perfect” always has to mean “problem-free.”  It doesn’t.  There are other kinds of “perfect.”
Hang on a sec. What do you mean that “everything is perfect as it is?”
I mean X+Y=Z.  Every single time.  The formula never fails.
What do you mean by X+Y=Z?
X is your internal environment.  All of your conscious and unconscious thoughts, memories, experiences, emotions, etc.  Y is the external environment.  It is everything and everyone within your sphere of awareness.  When X and Y come together, you create a reaction.  That is Z.   Z is your reaction to what happens when you see or hear something and it is processed through your internal filtering system.  Z then immediately becomes a part of X and the cycle continues – every second of everyday – you are constantly updating X with Z and the formula works perfectly every time.  “Perfect” does not mean “problem-free.”  There are many kinds of “perfect.”
How is Life Coaching different from therapy?
The main differences are in education and licensure.
Why are you a Life Coach instead of a licensed therapist?
Timing.  I became interested in the mental health profession later in life.  I became a certified Life Coach in 2019 – immediately fell in love with it – then I enrolled back in school.  I am currently earning a Master’s of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling to eventually become a licensed therapist.
Do you observe the ACA (American Counseling Association) code of ethics?
Yes.  As a counselor-in-training I use the ACA Code of Ethics as a guide for professional and ethical client interactions.
How much do you charge for coaching?

It depends.  Pricing is flexible, fair, and negotiable.  I typically charge anywhere from $100 to $150 per hour.

What is Career Coaching?

If you are looking for a new job and you want to be more intentional and targeted in your search, I can use my experience and connections as a recruiter to create a targeted search for you and prepare you for the interview process.  I can also help you create a great resume.

What is group coaching?
This is a group of like-minded people who are committed to practicing greater compassion, resilience, and trust.  We discuss issues and share with each other in a private group forum and meet every two-weeks to offer encouragement and support with whatever issues we are dealing with at the time.
What is NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)?
NLP is an experimental set of guidelines and techniques that can help a client better understand the language of their own brain.
What is hypnosis? Isn’t it kind of dangerous?
No, it is not dangerous.  Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and focus. You are awake and aware the entire time.  It is both a relaxing and energizing experience.
What is Timeline Therapy™?

It is a technique that takes you back to a past traumatic event as a way to reframe and release negative emotions associated with that event.

What is an Akashic Reading?

It is a deeply intuitive story we create together in session that can provide a powerful framework for the life that you want to live.  The “Akashic Record” is one of many traditional descriptions for the idea that the eternal intelligence of all living things is accessible through open-hearted imaginative exploration of mind.

Can you help me see the unconscious stories that I can’t see?

Yes.  That’s one of the things I do best.

Can you give me advice on how to be a better person?
I avoid giving advice.  Instead, I help you to discover your own advice for yourself.
Can you help me with my anxiety and depression?
Yes. Timeline Therapy™ is an especially helpful tool to identify and release past traumas that lead to anxiety and depression.
Can you help me overcome addictions?
Yes, depending on the severity of the addiction.  Hypnosis and Guided Meditations are powerful tools to assist in this.
Do you work with couples on conflict resolution?
Yes, I have experience working with couples.
Do you work with children?
I only work with adults 18 or older although I have on occasion worked with an adult client and their child together.
What are your hobbies?
I listen to audio books, create podcasts, and I love playing guitar and singing.
What is your favorite movie?
Everything Everywhere All At Once
What are the most influential books you have read?

You say that you help clients find peaceful balance between heart and mind – and you do it with warmth, humor, playfulness, and creativity. How can “warmth, humor, playfulness and creativity” fix my problems?
Humor is a powerful thing.  It can both unite and divide.  When humor is used as a form of ridiculing others, it can create a sense of separateness and superiority.  However, when humor is used with warmth and compassion in self-reflection, it can be a valuable way to accept the parts of yourself that are out of harmony with other parts of yourself.  It can be a way of realizing that some things aren’t always what they seem – some things are not nearly as bad as you thought they were.

Glenn’s Story

I was born and raised as a multi-generational member of the Mormon church and served as a missionary to Japan.  When I returned, I went to college and became interested in folklore, mythology, and traditional culture, so I entered a MA/PhD program in Folkloristics at Indiana University.  My plan was to become a Folklore professor and write novels.  Before I finished my PhD, an opportunity arose for me to go back to Japan to work for a Medical Device company.  I jumped at that opportunity and worked in the corporate healthcare world for the next 13 years.  I lived in Tokyo and travelled all around the world working with distributors throughout Asia, South America, and Europe. I was living the life.

Then everything turned upside down.

My parents divorced. A close friend of mine took his own life. I experienced what some have called a “faith crisis” and became very critical of the Mormon church and religion in general.  I experienced the pain of divorce in my own marriage. I lost my corporate job due to restructuring and redundancies.

In short, I experienced what is often referred to as “the dark night of the soul.”

Podcasting became my lifeline.  I started “Infants on Thrones” (the philosophies of men, mingled with humor) with a group of friends in 2012 and over the next 10 years I published over 800 episodes that had over 7.5 million downloads.  It was how I connected with others who were experiencing similar “dark nights of the soul” in their own lives.  It was the way that I continued to study and learn about people and their different perspectives on life.

As a result, my anger and frustration about religion slowly softened. I began to see the value in variety of human experience.

I became a very good listener and learned how to get out of my own egoic way in order to hold space for others.  I stopped using my humor to ridicule others and started using it to explore my own internal incongruities.

During this time, I became very interested in psychology, mental health, and neuroscience.  I learned about Cognitive Distortions and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).  I started to see how my own habits of thinking impacted the way that I felt about myself and others. I changed many things about my life and discovered the value of encouraging and supporting others exactly where they are – whatever they believe – rather than critiquing, judging, and ridiculing.

In other words, I learned to make peace with my own ignorance of things, and I became more accepting of subjective truths and the unexplained phenomena of life.  I also began to work as a recruiter – which I consider to be a “professional match maker” – and realized how much I enjoy connecting job seekers with employers who are urgently seeking the right fit.  It is a win-win-win situation for all that has been life changing for many of the job-seekers I have placed.

I also wrote a book in 2020 called “Bathing with God” that blends my interest in quantum mechanics and spirituality.  “Bathing with God” is an internal dialogue between my skeptical self and my imaginative self.  It details many of the ways that I processed my own critical, cynical nature as I became more accepting of the divine mystery of existence that we are all a part of.  You can find a copy of this book here.
